Household Hazardous
Materials (HHMs) are products found around the home that are considered
flammable, toxic, corrosive or reactive. They
can contaminate the air, soil, wastewater treatment systems and drinking water
supplies if mismanaged or disposed of improperly.
For the past few years, the
City of Sergeant Bluff
has collected a $2.00 per account fee during
the October utility billing for Household Hazardous Materials waste disposal.
As a result, the City has entered into a partnership with the City of
Items that can be taken to
the Collection Center include transmission fluid, gasoline and diesel fuels,
brake fluid, dry cleaning solvents, paint thinner, oil-based paint, stains,
varnish, herbicides, yard sprays, toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, metal
cleaners, fertilizer, weed killer, lead-acid batteries, pool chemicals, butane
lighters, glues, aerosols and mercury, among others.
Some items that can not be
accepted at this time include ammunition and explosives, asbestos, fire
extinguishers, electronics, motor oil or non-hazardous wastes.
