Household Hazardous Materials

Household Hazardous Materials (HHMs) are products found around the home that are considered flammable, toxic, corrosive or reactive.  They can contaminate the air, soil, wastewater treatment systems and drinking water supplies if mismanaged or disposed of improperly.

For the past few years, the City of Sergeant Bluff has collected a $2.00 per account fee during the October utility billing for Household Hazardous Materials waste disposal.  As a result, the City has entered into a partnership with the City of Sioux City. Sioux City has an HHM Collection Center located at the Sioux City Dump at 5800 28th Street in Sioux City.  It is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.   Sergeant Bluff residents are now able to drop off their household hazardous materials, by appointment, free of charge.  Appointments MUST be made in advance by contacting the Collection Center at 279-6292.  When calling, be sure you know exactly what it is you will be disposing and keep products in their original containers when possible.

Items that can be taken to the Collection Center include transmission fluid, gasoline and diesel fuels, brake fluid, dry cleaning solvents, paint thinner, oil-based paint, stains, varnish, herbicides, yard sprays, toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, metal cleaners, fertilizer, weed killer, lead-acid batteries, pool chemicals, butane lighters, glues, aerosols and mercury, among others.

Some items that can not be accepted at this time include ammunition and explosives, asbestos, fire extinguishers, electronics, motor oil or non-hazardous wastes.

Questions regarding HHM disposal should be directed to the Sioux City HHM Collection Center at 279-6292.
